The Badshoek Experience

The Great Karoo is. one of the world's most unique arid zones. In South Africa it stands alone, globally it is an envied rarity The Karoo, the Hottentot word for "Dry Thirstland", is considered a wonder of the scientific world. It is an ancient, fossil-rich land with the largest variety of succulents found anywhere on earth. There are over 9000 species of plants in the Great Karoo, one district alone being home to more species than the whole of Great Britain

Game animals, to whom these plains and mountains are home make the Great Karoo an outpost of nature where man's intrusion is still but a light touch. Here many species of game are found: Hyrax, Mountain Zebra, Springbuck, Wild Ostrich, Guinea fowl, Egyptian Geese and Lynx. Bird life is abundant. The endangered Black Rhinoceros and the Riverine Rabbit have also been re-established in the Karoo.

This is a therapy that no city dweller or nature lover will want to miss for any reason at all.

Our Hunting Philosophy

There are many methods of shooting or harvesting game, but there is only one way of hunting. That is when you select your buck and stalk it until you come within a range where you can be fairly certain that you can kill it instantly. 

The topography of Badshoek lends itself ideally to this method of hunting, so we strive to create this ideal. As this method requires a fair amount of skill, it also serves to create a much better feeling of achievement with the hunter.

Facilities

Hunting vehicles and rifles for hire, trained trackers, walkie-talkie radios, well equipped butchery with cooling facilities. Normal skinning, trophy skinning and processing of meat can be arranged.

Game viewing

For the visitor who wants to opt for the soul soothing activity of game viewing there are more than 40 wild animal species that roam around on the property. 

Visitors can either use their own vehicles or hire one from the lodge.

Guided day or night game drives can also be arranged. 

Bird viewing

The typography of the property ranges from low lying savannah veld to very rugged mountains with fynbos and therefore it hosts a wide range of bird life from the timid Fairy fly catcher to the spectacular Black Backed and Martial Eagles.

4x4 trailing and Biking

The property is nestled against and on top of the Nuveld Mountain Range and this provides spectacular gorges and cliffs making it the ideal terrain for hiking, biking or trailing.

Fishing

Fishing may sound strange in a semi desert region, but Badshoek's "gronddam" contains King Korb and Koi fish for the visitor that wants to opt for the tranquil activity of fishing. There are a wider variety of other fishing possibilities located on neighbouring properties for the serious fisherman.
